Half of the 14,175 vitamin D supplements in the NIH label database that print an amount list 15 mcg (600 IU) or less per serving; the middle half list 10 mcg to 25 mcg, and 1 in 12 of the 14,002 with a plausible amount give more than the adult upper limit at the most servings their labels direct (DSLD version 9.4.0, January 2026). The 1,492 products whose only supplement ingredient is vitamin D list a median of 50 mcg (2,000 IU), and 35% of them give more than the upper limit.

How much vitamin D do supplements contain?

The median product lists 15 mcg (600 IU) per serving. One in ten lists 3.75 mcg or less, one in ten 62.5 mcg or more. The amount printed most often is 10 mcg (400 IU) (3,167 products).

How do the amounts compare with the Daily Value and the upper limit?

The FDA Daily Value for vitamin D is 20 mcg (800 IU) (adults and children 4 and older). The median product gives 75% of it per serving; the 90th percentile 313%.

The adult Tolerable Upper Intake Level is 100 mcg (4,000 IU) a day (total intake from food, water and supplements). At the most servings their labels direct, 1,121 of the 14,002 products with a plausible amount (8.0%) give more than that from the supplement alone (what counts as plausible).

Which forms of vitamin D do labels name?

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form named most often: 10,698 of the 15,307 vitamin D products (70%), ahead of vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) (714, 5%). A product naming two forms counts in both; the table below gives every form.
