Research question

How many ingredients does a typical US dietary supplement actually list, how rare are single-ingredient products, and how does the physical form of a supplement relate to its label complexity?

Methodology

This analysis draws from PlainVitamins' current dataset. The summary line takes the average and maximum ingredient count across every product with at least one parsed ingredient. The distribution chart bins that count into five bands and counts the products in each band. The form chart groups products by physical form and counts the eight most common forms. Every figure on this page comes directly from the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements source data; nothing is hardcoded.

ingredient_count is a computed column derived from the parsed label ingredient list during ingest. Products where the source did not yield a usable ingredient list carry a zero and are filtered out by the WHERE clause so they do not distort the average or the band counts. Percentages quoted in the prose are computed in JavaScript from the raw integer counts returned by the band query and rounded for display; the raw counts are shown in the chart so any share can be recomputed.

A typical label lists about a dozen ingredients

Across the 113,538 products that carry at least one parsed ingredient, the average label lists 11.7 ingredients. The most crowded label in the database lists 304. The gap between that average and that maximum is the first clue about the shape of the data: a typical supplement is moderately complex, but a long tail of densely formulated products pulls the ceiling far above where most products sit.

The band chart above turns that summary into a shape you can read at a glance. The bulk of products fall in the two-to-five and six-to-ten ranges, the eleven-to-twenty band is still heavily populated, and a real population sits at twenty-one ingredients or more. Single-ingredient products, by contrast, occupy the smallest band of all.

Single-ingredient supplements are the exception

Only 3,830 products, about 3.4% of the total, list a single ingredient. That number surprises people who picture the supplement aisle as rows of plain vitamin C and plain magnesium. In reality, the clean one-ingredient bottle is rare. The overwhelming majority, roughly 96.6% of products, are multi-ingredient blends that combine vitamins, minerals, botanicals, amino acids, and other components into a single formula.

There is a commercial logic to this. A multi-ingredient product can make more on-label claims, can be marketed toward a goal such as sleep or immunity rather than a single nutrient, and is harder for a competitor to copy exactly. A single-ingredient product competes mostly on price and purity, which is a thinner margin to defend. The 14.2 percent of products that pack twenty-one or more ingredients, 16,118 of them, sit at the far end of that strategy.

More ingredients usually means less of each

For a shopper, a longer ingredient list is not automatically a better deal. A serving has a finite size, so every ingredient added competes for the same limited space. A product that lists twenty-five ingredients in a single small capsule cannot deliver a clinically meaningful dose of each one; something has to give, and what gives is usually the amount per ingredient. A focused product with five ingredients at full doses can be more useful than a sprawling formula that sprinkles a token amount of each.

The harder problem is the proprietary blend. When a label groups several ingredients under one blend name and lists only the combined weight, the count can look impressive while the per-ingredient amounts stay hidden. A reader sees a long, science-sounding list but cannot tell whether the headline ingredient is present at a real dose or at a dusting. Ingredient count, on its own, says nothing about transparency. Reading the supplement facts panel for individual amounts, and treating any blend that hides per-ingredient weights with caution, does far more than counting line items.

Form shapes how many ingredients fit

The physical form of a supplement is tied to how much it can carry, which is why the form mix matters. The most common form in the database is the capsule, with 41,439 products, and the chart below the limitations panel shows the full top of the distribution. Capsules and tablets dominate because they are cheap to manufacture, easy to dose, and shelf-stable, and they can hold a dense powder fill that supports longer ingredient lists.

Form constrains complexity in practical ways. Powders can carry large total amounts because the serving is mixed into a drink, which suits protein and greens blends with many components. Softgels suit oils and fat-soluble nutrients but hold less total mass, so they tend toward shorter lists. Gummies trade capacity for palatability: the candy base eats into the room available for active ingredients, so a gummy multivitamin usually lists fewer nutrients at lower amounts than its tablet equivalent. None of these forms is better in the abstract; each is a trade-off between how much it can deliver, how stable it stays, and how willingly a person will take it every day.

Taken together, the ingredient-count distribution and the form mix tell a consistent story about the US supplement market. It is built around moderately complex multi-ingredient products delivered mostly in capsules and tablets, with single-ingredient products as a small minority and ultra-dense formulas as a visible but bounded tail. For anyone evaluating a product, the useful move is to read the count as context rather than as a score: check how many ingredients are listed, then check how much of each one a serving actually provides before deciding whether the formula is generous or merely long.

What this analysis cannot tell us

Ingredient count here is the number of distinct line items the label lists, not a measure of dose, quality, or efficacy. A label that lists twenty ingredients may deliver a meaningful amount of two of them and trace amounts of the rest. The count includes both active ingredients and, depending on how the source parsed the label, can include listed other ingredients such as fillers, binders, and flow agents, so two products with the same count are not necessarily comparable. Proprietary blends are a particular blind spot: when a label groups several ingredients under one blend name with a single combined weight, the individual components may each be counted while their separate amounts stay hidden, so a high count does not guarantee transparency about how much of each ingredient a serving contains. The figures cover the products that carry at least one parsed ingredient; records where the source did not yield a usable ingredient list are excluded from the distribution rather than counted as zero. Counts reflect the label as filed with NIH, which may differ from a reformulated version sold later, and they say nothing about bioavailability, interactions, or whether any listed amount is effective.
